Description
Join Jon Kauffman from Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center, for a visit to Stone Mountain Hawkwatch for a great opportunity to observe migrating raptors as they journey to their over-wintering grounds. Participants will have the opportunity to meet volunteer counters and learn how the fall season is progressing, how to identify raptors in flight, and gain a better understanding of the phenology of fall migration.
Bring sturdy shoes, sunscreen, sunhat, trekking poles, a snack and water. Platform access involves a 15-minute walk on the Standing Stone Trail made up of exposed rocks and uneven terrain.
About the Presenter:
Jon Kauffman has been involved in the hawkwatching community since 2009 when he was the official counter at Tussey Mountain Hawkwatch. Since then, he has spent time enjoying migration at Cape May Bird Observatory, Intermountain Bird Observatory, Jack’s Mountain Hawkwatch, and Stone Mountain Hawkwatch. When not hawkwatching, you can find him exploring nearby habitats in the forest, farmland, and rivers for avian behavior.
Reschedule Policy
Because of the frequency and nature of our wellness sessions, adventure hikes, and guided outings, we are unable to reschedule these events. For special-topic programs, we will make every effort to reschedule when possible. If a special-topic event is postponed, participants will be notified with updated details as soon as they are available.
All programs are held rain or shine. In the event of a cancellation for severe weather, registrants will be contacted by email and/or phone, and it will be announced on our website, Facebook, and Instagram.
