SUMMARY:Forest Fire Management in Penns Woods
DESCRIPTION:With wildfire activity increasing across the region\, it’s a timely moment to look at how land managers work to prevent these fires before they start. Join us to learn about one of the most effective tools in wildfire prevention: prescribed fire \nIt might sound counterintuitive to fight fire with fire\, but prescribed burning (also known as controlled burning)\, reduces the buildup of vegetative fuels on the forest floor\, lowering the risk and severity of future wildfires. Beyond fire prevention\, this practice helps young trees grow\, restores native plant communities\, and controls invasive species. \nLed by foresters Jodi Skipper and Stephen Hoy of the PA DCNR Bureau of Forestry\, this event will cover: \n\nWhy prescribed burning is used as a forest management practice\nHow foresters decide when a burn is appropriate\nDesired outcomes of a prescribed burn\nSmoke management considerations\n\nConditions permitting\, trained foresters will set up a demonstration area so attendees can see different burning techniques up close and learn how terrain influences fire behavior. \nWhat to bring: Wear outdoor clothing and closed-toe footwear\, and pack bug and sun protection. Be ready to walk off-trail for demonstrations if conditions allow. There’s no pavilion or seating area at this site\, so bring a camp chair if you’d like a place to sit. \nAbout the Presenters: \nJodi Skipper: \nJodi Skipper is the Assistant District Forester for the Rothrock State Forest for the last 10 years but worked for DCNR in Buchanan State Forest as a management forester since 2000. In 2000 she found this passion for working on wildfire and prescribed fires in PA and out of state assignments and has continued ever since.  \nStephen Hoy:  \nSteve Hoy has been the Fire Forester for Rothrock State Forest since 2024. Prior to working for Pennsylvania DCNR he spent eight seasons working for the U.S. Forest Service and National Park Service as a wildland firefighter.

SUMMARY:Guided Outing: Barrens to Bald Eagle Wildlife Corridor
DESCRIPTION:This Wildlife Corridor was conserved by ClearWater Conservancy and numerous partners in 2010 to create safe passage for wildlife species between Bald Eagle Mountain and the Scotia Barrens. ClearWater Conservancy now owns 39 of the 103 acres that make up the corridor\, and that portion is open to the public and protected by a conservation easement held by Halfmoon Township. The remaining 64 acres are owned privately and enrolled in the Halfmoon Township Open Space Protection Program. Wildlife corridors are home to many species of wildlife and act as an important passageway for safe migration\, especially in areas where urban sprawl can prevent animals from roaming and moving freely between habitats throughout the year. Join us to hike along the rolling grassy trails and look for the many signs of life. \nDownload the mapped route here: Barrens to Bald Eagle \n\nParking Details\nParking Information: Gravel lot at the end of Harness Downs Road. SUMMARY:Wellness Wednesday: Forest Therapy
DESCRIPTION:During a Forest Therapy walk\, the trained Forest Therapy guide uses a clearly defined sequence of events and invitations in partnership with the forest which allows participants to slow down\, allow the senses to open\, and to experience the environment using all of the awakened senses to deepen the reciprocal relationship between participants and the forest. This supports the wholeness and well-being of both.  \nThe invitations are open-ended. There is no expectation for how to participate or what you experience or receive. Rather\, you spend time in silence\, listening and feeling with a quiet and accepting presence. You become reconnected with your senses\, and your innate creative potential is tapped\, which allows the imagination to awaken.  \nRegistration is required and opens one week in advance! \nAbout the Presenter:  \nMary Price is a Certified Forest Therapy Guide through the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy Guides and Programs. She is also certified in Wilderness First Aid through Wild Med\, and is certified in CPR/AED for adults\, children\, and infants through the American Red Cross. She has earned a Mental Health First Aid certification through Penn State Extension and has practiced Mindfulness Meditation for over ten years. Mary has a deep reverence for all natural settings\, and as a forest therapy guide\, she partners with nature to facilitate safe gentle walks with a focus on sensory immersion in the present moment. As a guide\, she helps to create and support meaningful and relational connections between participants and the more than human world. \n  \nReschedule Policy\nBecause of the frequency and nature of our wellness sessions\, adventure hikes\, and guided outings\, we are unable to reschedule these events. For special-topic programs\, we will make every effort to reschedule when possible.
